How To Delegate, When You’re Not the Boss

delegateIf you’re in a position that lingers in the vast space between management and entry- to near-entry level, you’re probably being faced with a new, awesome, awkward challenge: How to delegate, when you’re not even close to being the boss.

Here’s a 4 step recipe for delegating successfully, from someone who lives in the middle:

1. Get over it. 99% of people start at the bottom, which means you were right there getting delegated the crap jobs too, it’s the circle of life. As a result, you know how difficult it is to get assigned a task and feel like you don’t have the tools to be successful. That’s where steps 2 through 4 come in.

2. Set clear standards, but don’t overburden with process. It’s important to lay out the details, but leave room for autonomy — this could spur process improvement, or more importantly, empowerment. Just be sure you’ve communicated the basics:

  • What bigger picture is this apart of?
  • What audience is it for?
  • What’s your process, how long does it take, and when is it due?
  • Give an example of how it could be done.

3. Be a resource, or point to one. Being available and approachable can make all the difference in someone else’s confidence. Communicate that you’re there for any help they may need, just be sure that you follow through on that promise. If you know you’ll be busy, give them a backup person or a place to go to for answers.

4. Remember where you came from. This is the easiest thing to forget. You may be at the point in your career that you feel confident and competent most of the time — but remember that the person you’re working with might be relatively new. Showing trust in their abilities, and acknowledging where they may need your help is a surefire recipe for an empowered employee, a better end-result, and more time for you to focus on the bigger picture projects.
